Water left standing in the drum after a cycle is usually a blocked drain path, not a dead machine. Here is how the fault is found.
A machine that washes normally and then stops with water sitting in the drum is one of the most common calls we take in Mysore. In the large majority of these visits the pump itself is fine — something in the drain path is blocking it, and the control board simply stops the cycle because the water level never dropped.
This guide explains what causes it, what you can safely check before booking a technician, and when the fault genuinely needs a part replacement.
Almost every front-load and many fully automatic top-load machines have a small filter behind a flap at the bottom front. It collects lint, coins, buttons, hair clips and detergent sludge. Once it packs solid, the pump runs but moves no water. In hard-water homes the sludge sets harder and blocks faster, which is why we see this so often in Mysore city.
Behind the filter sits the pump impeller. A coin or a bra wire that slipped past the filter can stop it turning. The giveaway is a low humming or buzzing from the base of the machine during the drain step, with no water movement at all.
Machines pushed tight against a wall often crush the outlet hose behind them. A hose looped too high, or pushed too far into a floor drain so it seals, will also stop drainage. This is worth checking first because it costs nothing to fix.
If the filter and hose are clear and the impeller spins freely, the pump motor itself may be open-circuit or seized. A technician measures the pump winding rather than guessing — a genuinely dead pump reads open on a multimeter and needs replacement.
Less commonly, the machine drains fine but the pressure (water level) switch still reports water in the tub, so the cycle stalls. A blocked pressure chamber hose or a faulty switch causes this. Error codes such as OE on LG or 5E/5C on Samsung point here once the drain path has been ruled out.
If the filter is clean, the hose is clear and water still will not leave the drum — or the machine hums during drain without pumping — the pump, pressure switch or board needs to be measured. That is a doorstep job and usually finished in one visit.
