Washing Machine Not Spinning: Why It Happens

Clothes coming out soaked means the drum never reached spin speed. The cause differs between top-load and front-load machines.

"It washes but does not spin" covers two very different faults. Sometimes the machine is physically unable to spin — a drive fault. Sometimes it is refusing to spin because a safety condition is not met, such as water still in the tub or an open lid switch.

Knowing which one you have saves money, because the second group is often a small, inexpensive part.

Water is still in the tub

No machine will spin with water in the drum. If drainage is slow or blocked, the spin step is skipped entirely and the clothes stay soaked. Check drainage first — it is the single most common reason behind a "not spinning" complaint.

Top-load: gearbox, spin capacitor or lid switch

On semi-automatic and fully automatic top-load machines the spin tub is driven through a gearbox. A worn gearbox lets the tub turn slowly or not at all under load. A weak spin capacitor makes the motor hum without starting, and a broken lid switch tells the board the lid is open so spin never begins.

  • Motor hums but the tub does not turn — usually the capacitor
  • Tub spins freely by hand but not under load — gearbox or clutch
  • Nothing happens at all at spin — lid switch or timer contact

Front-load: belt, carbon brushes, tacho sensor or door lock

Belt-driven front-load machines lose spin when the belt stretches or slips off the pulley. On brushed motors, worn carbon brushes cause weak or intermittent spin. A failing tacho or hall sensor makes the board unable to read drum speed, so it aborts the spin. A door interlock that has not confirmed lock will stop the cycle before spin starts.

Unbalanced load

A single heavy item such as a bedsheet or a blanket can bunch to one side. The machine senses the imbalance, slows down and retries, then gives up. Redistribute the load and run a spin-only cycle — if it now spins, there is no fault at all.

Motor or control board fault

A machine that trips the MCB during spin, or one whose display resets at the spin step, points to the motor circuit or the main board. These are measured before any part is quoted, because a board replacement is one of the more expensive repairs and is rarely the actual cause.

Try this before booking

  2. 2Check whether water is still in the drum — if it is, treat it as a drainage fault first.
  3. 3Listen at the spin step: a hum without movement suggests capacitor or a jammed drum.
  4. 4On top-load machines, confirm the lid closes fully and the machine registers it.

When to call a technician

If the drum is empty of water, the load is balanced and spin still fails — or you hear a hum, a grinding noise or the MCB trips — the drive path needs measurement at your home.
