A leaking washing machine is worth attending to quickly — not because the repair is difficult, but because water sitting under the machine damages flooring and can reach the electrics.
The position of the puddle is the most useful clue, so start by drying the floor completely and running a short cycle while watching where the first drops appear.
On front-load machines this is nearly always the door gasket. Grit, coins and detergent residue cut small tears into the fold of the rubber, and water escapes only during the wash phase when the drum is full. A blocked or overfilled detergent drawer also overflows down the front panel.
Look at the inlet hose joints at both ends, the inlet valve body and the pressure hose. Inlet hose washers harden and shrink over the years, so a joint that was tight when installed starts to weep. This leak often appears only while the machine is filling.
A puddle centred under the machine usually means the sump hose clamp, the drain pump housing or the tub seal. Tub seal leaks are the serious ones — they let water reach the bearings, which is why an ignored under-machine leak often turns into a bearing noise complaint a few months later.
If the floor stays dry until the machine pumps out, the leak is in the drain path: a cracked pump housing, a loose outlet hose clamp, or a drain connection that backs up and overflows at the floor drain rather than the machine itself.
A machine that keeps filling past its normal level and spills through the door or the top will have a stuck inlet valve or a faulty pressure switch. Switch the tap off at the wall and book a technician — this fault can empty a lot of water into a room.
Gaskets, hose clamps, inlet valves, pump housings and detergent drawers are replaced at your doorstep. A tub seal leak should not be delayed, because it eventually damages the bearings.
