Refrigerator Not Cooling: What It Usually Means

A lit cabin only proves the fridge has power. Cooling depends on a separate circuit — here is how the cause is narrowed down.

Technician checking the compressor and relay at the back of a refrigerator

"The light is on but nothing is cold" is the single most frequent refrigerator call we take. The interior lamp runs straight off the mains, while cooling depends on the compressor circuit, so the two tell you nothing about each other.

Before assuming the compressor has failed — the most expensive outcome and the least likely one — it is worth working through the far more common causes in order.

The relay or overload protector has failed

A small plug-in relay starts the compressor. When it fails, the compressor clicks every few minutes and trips out instead of running. This is inexpensive to replace and accounts for a large share of "compressor failure" complaints that turn out to be nothing of the kind.

The condenser coil is choked with dust

The black coil at the back or underneath releases heat. Coated in dust and kitchen grease, it cannot, so the compressor runs continuously and still fails to cool. In Mysore homes with the fridge tucked into a tight recess this happens faster because there is no airflow around it.

The gas has leaked

Low refrigerant produces weak cooling that gets steadily worse, often with the compressor running non-stop. Charging gas without finding the leak is a temporary fix — the correct repair is to trace and braze the leak, vacuum the system, then charge the exact quantity for the model.

Frost-free fridge: defrost or fan fault

If the freezer is cold but the lower cabin is warm, the cooling system is working and the airflow is not. A stopped evaporator fan, a failed defrost heater or a defrost timer/sensor fault lets ice seal the evaporator so no cold air reaches the fridge section.

Thermostat, sensor or door seal

A thermostat stuck open never calls for cooling. A torn or slack door gasket lets warm humid air in continuously, which produces heavy frost, a compressor that never rests and poor cooling — and it is one of the cheapest parts on the appliance.

Check these before booking

  1. 1Confirm the temperature dial has not been knocked to the lowest setting.
  2. 2Pull the fridge out and check the rear coil for dust; brush it clean with the plug removed.
  3. 3Leave 8 to 10 cm of clearance behind and above the fridge for airflow.
  4. 4Close the door on a strip of paper — if it slides out easily, the gasket is not sealing.
  5. 5Listen: a compressor that clicks and stops repeatedly points to the relay, not the compressor.

When to call a technician

If the cabin is still warm after these checks, current and pressure readings are needed to separate a relay, a fan, a defrost fault and a genuine gas leak. We measure before quoting — a compressor is never recommended on symptoms alone.
